We recently have added a few more items made out of bamboo, from brands like KicKee Pants and Perfectly Preemie. We have received inquiries from customers asking what all the hype is over Bamboo fabrics. I thought it was an excellent question and here is my attempt to shed some light on this beautiful fabric. Below I have listed five of my top reasons that contribute to why bamboo is so great. These are not listed in any particular order. However, I did put the softest on top for a reason! You will understand this if you have ever felt bamboo. It is just wonderfully soft. So why wouldn't a preemie agree and love having some of the softest fabric next to their skin? The only downside is that bamboo fabric is harder to find and costs more, but I am sure as time goes by there will be more fabric choices available in bamboo and items made with it will come down in price.
- One of the softest fabrics on the planet - you'll love the way it feels
- Antibacterial - keeps you odor free and feeling and smelling fresh
- Powerfully insulating - keeps you cooler in summer and warmer in winter
- Hypoallergenic - natural bamboo does not cause allergic reactions
- Most eco-friendly fabric on the planet - help save your planet
For those of you who want to understand more of the details of why bamboo is so good, here are some details from this post: https://www.fibre2fashion.com/industry-article/3842/benefits-of-bamboo-fabric:
Unlike many of the other fabrics, bamboo is extremely breathable. The natural bamboo plant keeps itself cool in the heat and like its other properties, is also maintained in its fabric form. The cross-section of the bamboo fiber is covered with micro-gaps giving the fabric better moisture absorption and ventilation. As a result, it is able to keep the wearer almost two degrees cooler in the heat and noticeably warmer in the cold. Bamboo fabric is also "anti-static and UV protective as it cuts out 98% of harmful UV rays" providing the wearer with another beneficial quality from bamboo made clothing. The process of making Bamboo fabric does not require any chemical treatment, which causes the fibers to be naturally smoother and rounder with no sharp spurs to irritate the skin, making bamboo fabric hypoallergenic and perfect for those who may experience allergic reactions to other natural fibers and bamboo is also antibacterial and antifungal. This is because bamboo possesses an anti-bacteria and bacteriostatic bio-agent called "Bamboo Kun", allowing it to naturally flourish and grow in the wild without the use of pesticides or fertilizers. This beneficial quality of the plant remains in its textile form, killing all bacteria keeping the wearer feeling fresher and odor free for longer, making the garment healthier and more hygienic.
Like your average garment, bamboo fabric can be washed. For the best maintenance of bamboo clothing, it should be washed using the gentle cycle, cold or lukewarm water, dry on low heat or even better to hang to dry.
The most enticing aspect of bamboo fabric is that it is the most eco-friendly fabric on the planet. Bamboo, a type of tropical grass, has an extensive rooting system that grows on average four to six new shoots a year, naturally replenishing itself. It is also 100% biodegradable, the most renewable resource on our planet, and provides an abundance of usable oxygen making it a crucial element in the balance between oxygen and carbon dioxide in the atmosphere."
All I know is I LOVE bamboo and I'm so glad that we have found some great companies with preemie options. KicKee Pants now offers two Preemie sizes in their footies: Micro-Preemie and Preemie. They have prints that reflect the fun found around the world, with six releases a year. Perfectly Preemie has started rolling out bamboo products with their Baggette in Preemie & Newborn and will be expanding to a bamboo option in their next release of Playsuits in the Spring.
